So much for having my finger on the pulse of the, um . . . pulse of the . . . thing.

Last night CBS News began a four-part series, “Gotta Have It: The Hard Sell to Kids.” I missed it. Too busy cleaning out closets for the big garage sale on Saturday. And then witnessing Frances’ first-ever RBI.

Fortunately, Amy Jussel, even with a newborn, is more on top of it. Read all about it here, and tune in for the rest of the series.

UPDATE: Amy Jussel does NOT have a newborn. I confused her with one of the other 800 blogging women I try to track. So much for my super-keen reporting skills.

Um…do I have a newborn I don’t know about? Ahem. Amy Jussel at Shaping Youth here…we cover media and marketing’s impact on kids as a nonprofit consortium of concerned parents, media producers, academics, kids, and well…pretty much anyone with a pulse that is being influenced by the pop culture zeitgeist. —For the record, I have no newborns, but have “been there done that” heehe—just wanted to check your blog since I get so many pings that route off topic on spam trackbacks, but it looks like yours is spot on, legit, and an enjoyable read to boot, so stay in the game, breathe deep and know you’re not alone out there! Y’all come visit us now, ya hear? ;-) Best, Amy

Heh. Were I ever a parent I’d be an ogre about TV…

    “Can we have a television?”

“You can have it, if you can build it. I and will take it away if you abuse it.”

To be honest, a sixteen-year-old with a car scares me less than a five-year-old with a television.

Hey SB. I think the reason we escape so many of the problems others have is because we watch so little TV. But it also makes us a tad out of touch with, um, reality? If you want to call it that. Not watching American Idol alone makes us outcasts in some groups.

Mind if I use the “You can have it if you build it” when she asks for a cell phone?

I have read so much about this and find it appalling and amazing all at the same time. But where in the heck do 8-12 year olds get their own disposable income for Pete’s sake! It’s their parents or other adults hard earned money. 8-12 year olds cannot and do not work, with of course a few exceptions who are out there someplace.
