Bratz defenders come out of the woodwork, or, maybe Bratz aren’t all bad?

A flurry of Bratz commenting in the past few weeks which I’ve just approved (most of them) now.

Why all the comments? I was hoping to find that MGA Entertainment was paying little girls to post pro-Bratz comments all over the blogosphere, but much to my disappointment, there is no evidence of that.

Over the past six months, there have been spikes of activity in online posts about Bratz dolls, one of them being May 15, which coincides with my extra comments.

Although there were some clunkers among them,

Iwant all bratz

GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE GUTTER, MAYBE YOUR KIDS WOULDN’T BE SO SCREWED UP IF THEY HAD POSSITIVE MODELS LIKE THE BRATZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was generally surprised — and impressed — by the reactions. I didn’t realize that many “Bratz fans” are actually collectors:

ok i collect bratz dolls and i think they are cool. i may like them but i dont wear what they do.

I am a Bratz collector, along with my best friend. We are 13, and are actually the most immature in the class. we do not see bratz as skanky, but more as a cute display for our otherwise boring room. We never want to dress like them, or wear that much make-up.

They also put the blame where, to some degree, it does belong:

I think that the bratz dolls dress unaprpriatly. But if the parents don’t like it then yuo should not buy it . . .the parents should teach theire kids that dressing like the dolls is wrong.

If the parents dont like them then they shouldnt buy them! Adults act like us kids are going to copy everything we see and alot of us wont! Kids are smater than what adults seem to think!

I think that the problem is more big sisters, not the dolls, as Haley said. Another of my friends has an older sister and is totally into make-up, short skirts and skimpy tops. She doesn’t even own a Bratz. So everyone who disses Bratz dolls has a lesson to learn in my opinion: Is it really the dolls to blame? No. Who would want to dress like a doll anyway? If parents don’t like Bratz, then why do they buy them? Isn’t that just stupid?

just realize it isnt bratz it’s society

I also found out more by joining a couple of Bratz discussion groups. There are some pretty serious collectors out there — one owned more than 500 dolls.

All of this is to say that I have a better understanding of why Bratz dolls have such staunch defenders. And although I would never want to take away anyone’s right to collect, I still have to question how these dolls are adding value to young girls’ lives.
